Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 "In gardens and water springs?" 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 "And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And indeed your Lord - only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
