The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 Within gardens and springs 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 You are nothing but a man like us. Bring us a token if you speak the truth." 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And indeed your Lord only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
