The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 In gardens and springs. 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
