Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 The command that We have been sending 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
