Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Clear Book 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
