The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it setteth. 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 He does not speak out of his own desires. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 The Lord of Mighty Power has taught him, 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 until he was but two bow-lengths away, or even nearer. 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 He certainly saw him (Gabriel) during his other ascent 13 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit, 14 near which is Paradise. 15 (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. 16 His eye did not waver, nor did it stray, 17 He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third - the other one? 20 What! unto you the males and unto Him the females? 21 That indeed is a division most unfair! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
