The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 until he was but two bow-lengths away, or even nearer. 9 So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? 12 And verily he saw him yet another time 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. 18 Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Or shall man have whatever he fancies? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
