a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
