The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 We have certainly created man into hardship. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 to an orphaned relative 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
