a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
