A multitude of those of old 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
