The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 his wife, his brother, 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 and all those on earth. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 except those that pray 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
