The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 they see it as being far off; 6 And We see it nigh. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 Eager to roast; 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 But not so the worshippers 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
