The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 and all those on earth. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35

Notes and Instructions
When reading the Colorful Quran in English transliterated Arabic mode, you may not notice that there is an algorithm designed to match the pause requirements of the original Arabic scripture, (waqf signs). As you may know, the original Arabic Quran has five main types of pauses, (waqf) signs. (1) Compulsory break, where the transliteration uses a full stop. (2) Optional pause with the preference for pausing, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a probability of two thirds. (3) Optional stop with an equal preference for pausing and resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a half-half probability. (4) Optional pause with the preference for resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a chance of one third. (5) Attraction pause, also called hugging, or (mu’anaka) sign, where it is compulsory to pause at either one of two nearby positions, but not both; where the transliteration inserts a comma at either one of the two locations with a half-half probability.
