In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
O thou wrapped up in thy raiment! 1 Stand up for worship during the night, except for some part of it. 2 For half the night, or reduce some from it. 3 Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones. 4 Behold, We shall cast upon thee a weighty word; 5 Surely in the watches of the night the soul is most receptive and words more telling. 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 Remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly. 8 (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs. 9 And bear thou patiently what they say, and forsake them graciously. 10 Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile. 11 We have heavy fetters and a blazing Fire in store for them; 12 And food that chokes, and a painful punishment. 13 On the Day when the earth and the mountains will be in violent shake, and the mountains will be a heap of sand poured out and flowing down. 14 We have sent to you, (O men!) a messenger, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh. 15 but Pharaoh rebelled against the Messenger, so We seized him remorselessly. 16 How, then, if you refuse to acknowledge the truth, will you protect yourselves on that Day which shall turn the hair of children grey, 17 On that day, the heavens will be rent asunder. This is the decree of God which has already been ordained. 18 Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way. 19
