The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise and warn 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 And all abomination shun! 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 And children to be by his side! 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 It scorches people's skin 29 over it are nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
