He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ HE FROWNED and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or that he may accept advice, so the advice may benefit him. 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 But he who comes to you running, 8 and fearfully, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition. 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 On honourable pages. 13 Exalted, purified, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 Noble and dutiful. 16 Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he. 17 From what has God created him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then maketh the way easy for him, 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 Let Man consider his nourishment. 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 And grapes and clover, 28 Olives and dates, 29 And thick gardens, 30 And fruits and grass, 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 Laughing, joyous. 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 these, these will be the ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity! 42
