He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 to a rich man, 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 and fearfully, 9 Him thou neglectest! 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 lofty and pure, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 noble, pious. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 Then when He pleases, He will bring him back to life. 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And We made corn grow, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 And olive-trees and palm-trees 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 and fruits and fodder 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers). 42
