He Frowned ('Abasa)
42 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Stars (Al-Najm) before Destiny (Al-Qadr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 To him you give attention. 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 But he who comes to you running, 8 and who has fear of God, 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 Nay! surely it is an admonishment. 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble and righteous. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then, when He willed, He brought him out, as during the night of Holy Prophet's ascension, when all the Prophets gathered behind him in the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, or when Allah will raise everyone on the Day of Resurrection. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder; 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 and olives and palms, 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 laughing and joyful, 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 with darkness overspread: 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
True are the words of God the Almighty.
