He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 Unto him thou payest regard. 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 Perish Man! How unthankful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 Then, when He willed, He brought him out. (As during the night of Holy Prophet’s ascension, when all the Prophets gathered behind him in the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Or when Allah will raise everyone on the Day of Resurrection.) 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Let Man consider his nourishment. 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 And produce therein corn, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 and olives, and palms, 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 fruits, and grass. 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his wife and his sons; 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
