Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 and the ten nights! 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 Consider the night as it runs its course! 4 is there not in this strong evidence for a man of sense? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 (The people of) Aram, possessors of lofty buildings, 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 and you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 Join My servants. 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
