The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the sun and its midmorning, 1 And by oath of the moon when it follows the sun 2 and by the day when it displays him 3 And the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 by the sky and how He built it 5 and the earth and all its expanse! 6 The soul and how it was integrated 7 And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. 8 Truly he succeeds that purifies it, 9 And he will indeed fail who corrupts it. 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 When the most wicked among them stood up in defiance. 12 although God's apostle had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to God, so let her drink [and do her no harm]!" 13 But they belied him, and hamstrung her. So their Lord crushed them for their sin and leveled it (their village). 14 and He fears not the issue thereof. 15
