The Night (Al-Layl)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 but for him that is a miser, and sufficed, 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Verify on us is the guidance 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 Who had denied and turned away. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 And indeed, soon he will be very pleased. 21
