The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 And who belieth the Good, 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 who have rejected the (Truth) and have turned away from it. 16 But save him who fears 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
