The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 but for him that is a miser, and sufficed, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire 14 None except the most wicked will enter it. 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
