The Night (Al-Layl)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 And what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction). 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world -- 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it, 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 And none hath with him any favour for reward, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 And indeed, soon he will be very pleased. 21
