The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day resplendent 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
