a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
