The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
