The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Rise up and warn! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 and purify your robes, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 and who still desires more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 Then looked he, 21 frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 said, "This (the Quran) is nothing but magic, inherited from ancient magicians. 24 "This is nothing but the word of a human being!" 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may arrive at a certainty [that this Quran is the truth as it agrees with their Books i.e. their number (19) is written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] and the believers may increase in Faith (as this Quran is the truth) and that no doubts may be left for the people of the Scripture and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say: "What Allah intends by this (curious) example?" Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none can know the hosts of your Lord but He. And this (Hell) is nothing else than a (warning) reminder to mankind. 31
