Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
KAF HA YA 'AIN SAD. 1 This is an account of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah 2 When he called to his Lord inwardly, 3 and said, "My Lord, my bones have become feeble and my hair has turned white with age. Yet I have never been deprived in receiving from You the answer to my prayers. 4 "Now I fear (what) my relatives (and colleagues) (will do) after me: but my wife is barren: so give me an heir as from Thyself,- 5 “He being my successor and the heir of the Descendants of Yaqub (Jacob); and my Lord, make him a cherished* one.” (* Make him a Prophet among the Descendants of Israel.) 6 (His prayer was answered): "O Zakariya! We give thee good news of a son: His name shall be Yahya: on none by that name have We conferred distinction before." 7 He said: My Lord! How can I have a son when my wife is barren and I have reached infirm old age? 8 He said: So shall it be, your Lord says: It is easy to Me, and indeed I created you before, when you were nothing. 9 (Zakariya) said: "O my Lord! give me a Sign." "Thy Sign," was the answer, "Shall be that thou shalt speak to no man for three nights, although thou art not dumb." 10 So he came from the chamber to his people, and suggested to them (by signs) to sing the praises of the Lord morning and evening. 11 [Allah] said, "O John, take the Scripture with determination." And We gave him judgement [while yet] a boy 12 and tenderness from Us and purity, and he was cautious; 13 honoring his parents, being neither arrogant nor rebellious. 14 So Peace on him the day he was born the day that he dies and the day that he will be raised up to life (again)! 15
