These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
