Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. 18 Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night – you will be pursued.” 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
