A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
