The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 and by the day when it unveils. 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We will facilitate for him the easy end. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 Who denies and turns away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
