The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Eager to roast; 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
