The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 arise and warn, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaves and spares no one and nothing. 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
