A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and many from the later generations. 40 But those of the left hand -- how those of the left hand -- 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
