The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
