The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. 21 save those that pray 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
