The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 Within gardens and springs 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
