Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By oath of the (particular) dawn. 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 by the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 for, verily, thy Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 [But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace! 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 Join My servants. 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
