Now, behold, this [divine writ] has indeed been bestowed from on high by the Sustainer of all the worlds: 192 The honest Spirit (Gabriel) brought it down 193 Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] - that you may be of the warners - 194 in a clear, Arabic tongue. 195 Truly it is in the Scriptures of the ancients. 196 Is it not a sign to them that the learned scholars (like 'Abdullah bin Salam who embraced Islam) of the Children of Israel knew it (as true)? 197 And if We had revealed it (this Quran) unto any of the non-Arabs, 198 and he had recited it to them, they would not have believed in it. 199 We have thus caused denial of truth to enter into the hearts of the sinners: 200 They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment. 201 It shall come to them of a sudden, while they perceive it not; 202 Then will they say: "Can we be given respite?" 203 Would they then wish for Our Torment to be hastened on? 204 Do you not see that even if We give them respite for years 205 and then what they were promised comes to them, 206 So of what benefit will be the comforts that they were using? 207 And never did We destroy a township, but it had its warners 208 To remind, and We are never unjust. 209 Not by the Satans has it been brought down; 210 Neither would it suit them, nor they can (produce it). 211 Truly, they are expelled from hearing. 212 So invoke not with Allah another ilah (god) lest you be among those who receive punishment. 213 And warn [whomever thou canst reach, beginning with] thy kinsfolk, 214 Lower thy wing to those who follow thee, being believers; 215 If they disobey you, tell them, "I condemn your disobedient deeds". 216 And put thy trust in the Mighty, the Merciful. 217 Who seeth thee when thou standest up 218 and observes your movements among those who prostrate themselves. 219 Surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 220 Shall I inform you, (O people!), on whom it is that the evil ones descend? 221 They descend on every lying, wicked person, 222 on those who whisper hearsay in the ears of people; and most of them are liars. 223 And as for the poets -- it is the misled who follow them. 224 Have you not seen how they wander in every valley, 225 And that they say what they do not do? - 226 except those who believed and acted righteously and remembered Allah much, and when they themselves were subjected to wrong, they exacted retribution no more than to the extent of the wrong? Soon will the wrong-doers know the end that they shall reach. 227
