The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 in which you are now living 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
