The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ WHEN THAT which must come to pass [at last] comes to pass, 1 (and none denies its descending) 2 Abasing (one party), exalting (the other), 3 when the earth will suddenly shake with a terrible shaking, 4 And the mountains will be powdered to dust. 5 And become dust dispersing. 6 On that day, you (mankind) will be divided into three groups: 7 Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right? 8 And those on the Left Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Record in their left hands), Who will be those on the Left Hand? (As a disgrace for them, because they will enter Hell). 9 As for the Foremost, they will be the foremost! 10 Those! they shall be the brought nigh, 11 In the Gardens of delight (Paradise). 12 A multitude from the ancients. 13 and a lesser number from the later generations. 14 They will recline on jewelled couches 15 Reclining on them, facing each other. 16 Round about them shall go youths never altering in age, 17 With goblets and ewers and a cup of limpid drink. 18 Whereby there shall be neither headiness nor will they be inebriated. 19 and with fruit of any kind that they may choose, 20 and the meat of any bird that they may desire; 21 They will have maidens with large, lovely black and white eyes, 22 like the pearls in their shells: 23 A reward for what they used to do. 24 No empty talk will they hear there, nor any call to sin, 25 only the words of peace and tranquillity. 26 And the fellows on the right hand; how be happy shall the fellows on the right hand be! 27 Midst lote-trees thornless. 28 And clustered plantains, 29 and amid the extended shade 30 and outpoured waters, 31 and abundant fruits, 32 Unending, unforbidden, 33 And raised couches; 34 Perfectly We formed them, perfect, 35 And have made them virgins. 36 Devoted [to their husbands] and of equal age, 37 For the Companions of the Right Hand. 38
