Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure – We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
