In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENWRAPPED in the cloak (of Prophethood), 1 Stand (to prayer) by night, but not all night,- 2 (Worship Him) for more or less than half of the night 3 Or add (a little) thereto - and chant the Qur'an in measure, 4 Indeed We shall soon ordain a heavy responsibility upon you. 5 Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words. 6 Lo! thou hast by day a chain of business. 7 Remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He. So take Him alone for your Guardian, 9 Bear patiently whatever they say, do not yield to them and keep on preaching decently to them. 10 And leave Me and the rejecters, the possessors of ease and plenty, and respite them a little. 11 Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire, 12 food that chokes and painful punishment 13 On the day the earth and mountains will rock violently, and the mountains turn to a heap of poured-out sand. 14 BEHOLD, [O men,] We have sent unto you an apostle who shall bear witness to the truth before you, even as We sent an apostle unto Pharaoh: 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed Our Messenger, so We seized him with a terrible seizing. 16 If you disbelieve, how will you guard yourself against the Day that will make children gray haired, 17 And the heaven shall be split therein. His promise indeed must be fulfilled. 18 This is indeed a Reminder. Let whosoever will take the Path to his Lord. 19
