a large group of the earlier people 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
