The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 stay away from sins 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
