[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 When their brother Hud said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 124 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 125 So fear Allah and obey me. 126 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 127 Do you construct on every elevation a sign, amusing yourselves, 128 Erect palaces (thinking) that you will live for ever, 129 And whenever you apply force become tyrannical. 130 So fear Allah, and obey me. 131 And fear He who provided you with that which you know, 132 He has given you flocks and sons, 133 and gardens, and springs -- 134 Lo! I fear for you the retribution of an awful day. 135 They said: it is equal unto us whether thou admonishest or art not of the admonishers. 136 “This is nothing but the tradition of former people.” 137 And we are not to be punished." 138 And they denied him, so We destroyed them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 139 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 140
